Buggyfit presents: The Tommys Baby Race 2014 at Bluewater

So as 2014 arrives, we are coming into the 3rd year that Buggyfit will be hosting The Baby Race at Bluewater.

I have had the absolute pleasure of being involved in this event in my capacity as Buggyfit Instructor for Medway & Gravesham and nothing excites me more than when the date is released and mums can finally start applying for their place online.

The release date is due very soon and then you will be able to pop online, register and take part in this fantastic 8km power walk around bluewaters parkland, helping to raise vital funds for Tommy's who provide research into premature birth, stillborn babies and miscarriage.

It was in January 2012 that I agreed to host a local Baby Race and when Bluewater offered us their parkland I was delighted. I had always known about the work that Tommy's do, but until you really listen and until you hear the statistics you never really understand how important the work they do is. One in four pregnancies end in miscarriage. Such a shocking figure, but all the more real because as women I am sure we all have a friend or indeed have experienced first hand the sadness of miscarriage.

It was in March, just 8 weeks after I had helped launch The Baby Race, that one of my very dear friends gave birth to her son, Noah James on 27 March. Noah was one of the 4000 babies in the UK that are born sleeping every year. A full term baby with no rhyme or reason, or answer as to why this happened. It hit everybody close very hard, not to mention Noah's exceptionally amazing parents. What it also did was give me nothing but 100% determination to make The Baby Race the success that it was.

We had over 100 mums running along with dads, nan's and even a granddad! The sun shone from the moment we woke up that day. Mickey Mouse and Peppa Pig made an appearance at the starting line, the music played and everyone was smiling.

We raised almost £18,000 - not bad for a local mummy buggy race ey?

This year will be no different and once again we hope for the sun to shine, the mums to come along and support us and lots of money will be raised for Tommys.
